New Homeschooler: Start Here

If you’re a new homeschooler–or new to SC–start here! We’ve got lots of help to explain the law and help you get connected to social and educational opportunities.

When you homeschool, you will DIY your child’s education. (NOTE: You must be the parent or legal guardian of the child. You cannot homeschool someone else’s child). You pick and choose the learning materials and activities. You set the pace and schedule of the assignments. And you keep track of the progress.

The law is somewhat specific about the record-keeping that you need to do, in order to keep track of the progress. And they want someone to verify that you’re doing that. That’s what the accountability association is for. It’s pretty straightforward–just a checklist that you state you’re doing the record-keeping and attendance requirements.
Associations not provide the curriculum nor interact with the student about the daily assignments. Usually they will provide some information to help you choose your learning materials and course of study. But, the world is our classroom. Learning happens 365 days a year. We just have to document 180 of them as equivalent to compulsory attendance.
Cola City Homeschoolers is NOT an accountability group. We don’t help you with your record-keeping requirements. But we have a social group for in-person community called Cola City PLUS.
If you want more help getting started, this is a 30-minute tutorial and a step-by-step guide to go along with it to sort out the various components of your educational plan. Special offer 1/2 price: Only $9.50 with this referral link.

The step-by-step guide is free, if that’s all you want. Click Here for FREE Printable Guide–and read more at the SC Homeschooling Connection. It’s a free resource hub for all homeschoolers in SC and beyond, no matter which association you choose.

Always check with your accountability agency to be sure what their policies and procedures are. We all follow the same basic requirements, but each association may have different services that they offer, such as transcript assistance. The policies may vary.
