SUMMARY:Youth Conservation Poster Contest
DESCRIPTION:Home is Where the Habitat Is\nby Richland Co. Soil/Water Conservation\ndeadline: Friday\, April 11\nK5-12th grade — FREE\nNote: This is not a Cola City activity. But\, we are eligible as a school in Richland County\, if you want to participate. \nRichland County students are invited to design a habitat awareness poster highlighting the diversity and importance of natural and managed habitats. Each poster must include the words “Home is Where the Habitat is” in the poster design. \nPosters submitted by Friday\, April 11\, 2025 will be eligible for prizes at the local\, state\, and national levels. \nA habitat is the unique environment where an organism lives\, from tiny rock pools to vast forests. The 2025 Stewardship theme\, “Home is Where the Habitat is\,” highlights the role of both natural and managed habitats in our conservation efforts. When we take care of the habitats where animals and plants live\, we are promising them a safe home to grow and live happily. This keeps everything in nature working well together\, like a big team where everyone has an important job. When the team works well\, our planet stays healthy and beautiful. \nHOW TO ENTER:\n1. Learn more about different types of habitats. Why are\nhabitats important? How does conserving habitats support\nbiodiversity and maintain ecological balance?\n2. Create a design that illustrates the importance of habitats. Include the words “Home is Where the Habitat is” in the poster design. The recommended paper size\nis 11″ x 17″. Posters in any size 8.5″ x 11″ or larger are\naccepted. Use markers\, crayons\, colored pencils\, paint\, or\nother flat media to make it colorful!\n3. Attach a completed entry form to the back of your poster. Submit your poster to the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District by Friday\, April 11\, 2025. Contest\nwinners will receive cash prizes! \nContact \nRichland Soil and Water Conservation District\n2020 Hampton Street\, Room 3063A\nColumbia\, SC 29204\nPhone (803) 576-5464\nFax (803) 576-2088\nE-mail soilandwater@richlandcountysc.gov\nFacebook www.facebook.com/rswcd\nInstagram www.instagram.com/richland_swcd/

SUMMARY:Reader's Theater
DESCRIPTION:Common Ground: Reader’s Theater\nApril 23 from 12:30-2:30pm\nAt UU Congregation\nAll Ages — $5/participant\nNOTE: This event has been cancelled due to low response/not enough registrations. If you’re interested in these kinds of facilitated activities\, please be sure to pre-register so we can prepare supplies.  \nThe Common Ground Collective is a space for students and parents to come together\, connect\, and grow. In a world often divided by differences\, our mission is to create a joyful and supportive community where we celebrate what makes us unique and discover the common ground that unites us all. \nThis week we’re doing Reader’s Theater. Participants are given the opportunity to perform a script together. Reader’s Theater gives students the chance to practice reading aloud\, and practice reading with fluency and expression.\nOne of the most enjoyable ways to help students comprehend stories they read is to have them act it out\, using strategies for prompting oral development\, plus team effort and collaboration! Geared for ages 9+\, but younger readers may also participate. \nWe’re asking for $5 contribution toward the overhead costs of the facility. If you have multiple children or the cost is prohibitive\, pay what you can afford–and come anyway. We’d rather you come out and play\, than stay home. Please sign up so we know how many participants are coming! \nLocation: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia\, 2701 Heyward St\, Columbia\, SC 29205\nLook for Kim to greet you. Text and/or call if you get lost along the way 803-307-4880 \nRegistration is Closed for this event. Sign up for the next session:\nScience Share Fair on May 7 at 12:30\, located at UU Congregation

SUMMARY:Science Share Fair
DESCRIPTION:Science Share Fair\nBy Cola City Common Ground Club\nWednesday\, May 7 at 12:30\nAll Ages — $5/space\nThis is a fun twist on Show and Tell. Rather than stand up in front of a group to do a one-off presentation. Participants will set up a table/presentation area for on-going short presentations/demonstrations in a “fair” format. Participants will have designated presentation time\, then also time to mingle as viewers/observers while others are presenting. \nIt’s a great chance to show off something that you have already learned in any topic of Science: Biology\, Chemistry\, Physics\, Earth Science\, Natural Sciences\, Astronomy\, Environmental Science.\nWe recommend projects that are hands-on\, interactive demonstrations or have samples\, hand-outs\, give-aways. You can do something that includes the scientific method\, if you want\, but it’s not required. \nAll participants will get a prize and certificate. There will not be judges to evaluate. This is a fun way to “tell others” something that you learned. You can do individual projects/presentations or buddy up with siblings or friends for your presentations. \nBring your presentation/project and your own table/display. We will set up between 12:30-1 pm. Presentation shifts will begin at after everyone is set up. \nQuestions? Contact Kim at colacityinfo@gmail.com. Text and call if you need to reach us last minute. \nSign up here to reserve your space:
