SUMMARY:Holiday Mock Market Day
DESCRIPTION:Holiday Mock Market Day\nBy Cola City Homeschoolers\nWednesday\, Oct. 30\nfrom 10am-noon\nAll ages — $5/vendor space\nMarket Day is a fun\, opportunity to be a creative entrepreneur and snag a bunch of treats! Wednesday\, October 30th from 10am to noon. Wear your costumes\, too! \nLocation: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia\, 2701 Heyward St\, Columbia\, SC 29205 Free parking along both sides of the street–look for the entrance at the corner/front side of the building. \n(Let Grow Play Club meet-up: Hide and Seek Trick or Treat is at Owens Field afterwards from 1-3pm) \nEntrepreneur Challenge: create items for “sale”: something fun\, useful\, or beautiful. Holiday Theme recommended. \nIdeas for getting started: Bookmarks\, DIY Slime\, Homemade Soaps\, Origami Creations\, DIY Stress Balls\, Sun Catchers\, Dream Catchers\, Beaded Bracelets\, DIY Bouncy Balls\, DIY Bath Bombs\, Wood Crafts\, DIY PlayDoh\, Picture Frames\, Small Clay Dishes\, Paper Flowers\, Pet Rocks\, Painted Stones\, Magnets\, Mod Podge Creations\, Homemade Comics\, Pour Paintings\, Keychains. Edible items are permitted\, too: either homemade or packaged creatively. \nParticipants may set up as individual vendors or partner together. Market Day bucks will be provided per vendor space\, to shop for items. Each vendor space is $5 (will be provided $20 Market Day bucks). Partners sharing a space will also share their market day dollars. \nVendors please price items or have a price sign. Each participant will be provided with Market Day Bucks only–no coins. So keep that in mind with your prices. \nNotes to clarify about the market day bucks and the particpation fee: \n\nParticipants will not earn or use “real money.” Think of it more like a mock market day or a trading day. The currency is a set amount for each participant–so they can value their items and trade within the closed economy. Like a barter system of sorts–they’ll walk away with other “goods” to show for their contribution to the economy.\nWe do have a small fee for participation to cover our overhead costs of running and organizing Cola City. That money goes into the “economy” of this event and this support resource.\nConsider the real life value of your market items between $.25-$1.50 per items. Prepare 15-30 items for your store. Set the market day bucks prices between $1-$5.\nBonus bucks ($5)  for vendors who incorporate recycled\, repurposed or environmentally-friendly products–and can explain this component.\nParents will not have any spending money. Roles will be reversed\, to get your child to buy items that you might want.\n\nSign up here to get a vendor space:

SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Rebecca Kuang
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Author: Rebecca Kuang\nby Richland Library Main\nFriday\, Nov 15th @ 7pm\nAll Ages — FREE\nNote: This is NOT a Cola City event \nAward-winning\, #1 New York Times bestselling author Rebecca F. Kuang will discuss her recent works Babel: An Arcane History and Yellowface as part of Richland Library’s Broader Bookshelf program. The author talk will be followed by a reception\, book sale\, and book signing. \nThe Broader Bookshelf Reading Challenge encourages readers to expand their bookshelves and seek out new authors and challenging subjects. Ms. Rebecca F. Kuang will share her work and talk about the themes of student revolutions\, colonial resistance\, diversity\, racism\, and cultural appropriation. \nThis is an after-hours event and registration is not required. The library will close as usual at 6:00 p.m. and will reopen at 6:30 p.m. for attendees of Meet the Author: Rebecca Kuang. \nRebecca F. Kuang is the award-winning\, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Poppy War trilogy and Babel: An Arcane History.  Babel\, a thematic response to The Secret History and a tonal retort to Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell\, grapples with student revolutions\, colonial resistance\, and the use of language and translation as the dominating tool of the British empire. It asks the question\, can powerful institutions be changed from within\, or does revolution always require violence? \nHer most recent novel\, Yellowface\, young writer Juniper Song becomes an overnight sensation – but she is not who she says she is\, she didn’t write the book she claims she wrote\, and she is most certainly not Asian American. Yellowface grapples with questions of diversity\, racism\, and cultural appropriation\, as well as the terrifying alienation of social media. It’s a timely\, razor-sharp\, and eminently readable. \nA Marshall Scholar\, she has an MPhil in Chinese Studies from Cambridge and an MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies from Oxford; she is now pursuing a PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale\, where she studies diaspora\, contemporary Chinese literature\, and Asian American literature. \nMore info about this event can be found HERE.

SUMMARY:Family Culture Stories Share Fair
DESCRIPTION:Family Culture Stories Share Fair\nCANCELLED\nBy Cola City Homeschoolers\nWed.\, Dec. 4 from 10am-noon\nAll Ages — $5/space\nNote: This is Cola City event. Registration required–scroll down to reserve your space. \nWho are you? Where do you come from? Tell us about your family history and traditions. This is a great opportunity to learn about each other and make meaningful connections within our community. \nPresentation content: Highlight something about your family culture\, origin stories of where you’re from\, traditions that have been handed down. Create a table top display and prepare a narative about it. It can be a broader story about the culture and traditions. Or it can be a specific story about a relative or ancestor. \nPresentation format: The presenters get to tell about their project several times\, not just a one-time show-n-tell as participants meander and mingle. It’s also very relaxed style of presenting one-on-one\, rather than the formal “speech”. \nWe recommend projects that are hands-on\, interactive demonstrations or have samples\, hand-outs\, give-aways. Make it conversational for others to ask questions and comment\, not just passively listen. \nLocation: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia\, 2701 Heyward St\, Columbia\, SC 29205 (Let Grow Play Club meet-up is at Grandby Garden afterwards from 1-3pm) \nPurpose: Cola City Homeschoolers believe that education is two parts. Learning about yourself and learning how you fit into the world around you. It takes intentional efforts to do that. And learning is a lifelong journey\, sometimes relearning\, discovering something new that you never knew before\, and unlearning to change your perspectives.\nRecommended readings: Here’s a couple resources to inspire you with practical ways to foster more open dialogue on tough topics–with our stories. \n\n\n\nA Place to Belong: Celebrating Diversity and Kinship in the Home and Beyond by Amber O’neal Johnston. This is a guide for families of all backgrounds to celebrate cultural heritage and embrace inclusivity in the home and beyond. Ideal for parent/educators who want to cultivate a home library that provides mirrors to reflect your own lived experiences and windows to glimpse into differing experiences.\nStories Behind Stances: Creating Empathy Thru Hearing the Other Side by  Chris Singleton. In his mission to unite people from all different walks of life\, Chris explores various ways in which we can learn to see beyond our differences and embrace our shared values\, hopes\, and aspirations. Ideal for Adults and Teens to consider our own beliefs and biases\, to listen to those whom we disagree with\, and find common ground where we can build a better world. \nYour Life Matters by Chris Singleton. Written by national speaker Chris Singleton\, who lost his own mother in the 2015 Charleston church shooting\, Your Life Matters teaches kids to stand tall in the face of racial adversity and fight for the life they dream of.\n\n\n\n \nRegistration is Closed–Event is CANCELLED.\nCome for Play Club from 1-3pm\n
