Contact Nature as Teacher for more information and parking pass reservations.  \nAll community centered organizations are invited to prepare thoughtful\, fun\, educational and exciting Trick-or-Treat Stations for our guests that walk the Trick-or-Treat Trail! Who do you think will win this year? \nTo help ensure everyone’s safety\, visitors enjoying the Trick-or-Treat Trail this year will be required to register for a free parking pass with specified arrival times. Get yours now and get your spot! \nWhat to bring/wear: This is a family friendly event. Come in costume (optional) and bring bags/buckets for collecting treats along the trail. The Trick-or-Treat-Trail loop is about a 10 minute walk on gravel and mulch with “spooky” animal learning stations along the way! Be sure to wear footwear appropriate for the outdoors. Strollers & wagons welcome. Please help children dress appropriately for the weather. \nPlease\, no bikes\, scooters or motorized vehicles on the trail. Dogs welcomed on leash. \nDirections: Be sure to print and display your parking pass receipt or have a screenshot ready on your phone. From Walmart in Camden head north on Springdale Drive\, toward the race track. Chestnut Ferry Road (a dirt road) crosses over Springdale drive at the bend. Turn left onto Chestnut Ferry road and continue down until you see our pinecone logo sign. Our driveway is the last on the left. After proceeding through our gate\, do not stop in the maintenance lot unless you do not have a parking pass or arrive outside of your identified time. Continue down our long driveway\, past the right turn\, and into the parking area. You will see our green and tan restroom building near the trailhead.

All are encouraged to dress up. \n\nWe will start with a pumpkin carving contest for the tweens and teens. Each person (or family) should bring his or her own pumpkin and carving tools. You can print out a design beforehand or just freehand. Younger siblings who are not carving\, can watch or play in the park.\n\nOnce the contest is over\, we will do Trick or Treat Hide and Seek. Teen volunteers will hide in the park with a stash of candy while younger participants seek for them. When they are found\, they will give out candy. Bring a bag of candy to contribute to the game. \n\nMeanwhile\, judges will judge the best pumpkins in the contest. When we come back together after Hide and Seek\, we will announce the results of the carving contest and give away prizes.\n\nWe will be at Southeast Park\, 951 Hazelwood Rd\, Columbia\, SC 29209. The kickoff is our signature event\, the Liberty Live Education Day. BE OUT is a new tool for elementary (K-7) school teachers and includes exemplars of outdoor learning from a diversity of teachers organized in a digital format. \nThe tool is designed with very short (90 second) modules and targets teachers new to teaching outdoors with support in four key areas: understanding risky play in the school context; getting started teaching outdoors; teaching with an emergent curriculum; and assessment of learning. \nDr. Mariana Brussoni is Director of the Human Early Learning Partnership and Professor at the University of British Columbia and BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. Her research investigates child injury prevention and children’s outdoor risky play with the aim of creating environments where all children can play outside every day. \nMegan Zeni is a mom of 3\, an experienced elementary school teacher\, and a master gardener. Megan successfully re-imagined the prep position in her public school and turned it into her dream job of spending her days with children in the garden classroom. Megan is an advocate for taking children outdoors at school in all kinds of weather to learn\, play\, and grow. We will organize the lists by religious preference and by ages (as much as possible). You’ll get a list of participants to exchange cards with–10-25 cards to send/receive. Lists will vary depending on participants registered. \nNote: Your mailing address will be shared with other participants and student names\, so that the cards can be personalized by the sender. \nSome more recommendations: \n\nSend one envelope to each household. Include a small card/note for each child\, or small token gift (ie: sticker\, tattoos\, paperdoll\, etc).\nConsider your child’s abilities and stamina for their part of the card preparations. Register below. \nCome for this ranger-led lesson on forest conservation\, led by Ranger Beth Foley. Meet at Harbison State Forest Education Center 5500 Broad River Road Columbia\, SC 29212. Parking is free for this event. \nThe program is geared for 6th grade and up level\, but all ages are welcome to participate. Families with younger siblings can listen in and tag along or stroll the path at your own pace. \nProgram: Survival in the Forest\nStudents will learn how plants and animals survive in the forest. They will participate in an activity called “Every Tree for Itself” where they will become trees that must collect the basic resources needed to survive.
