Register below. \nCome for this ranger-led lesson on forest conservation\, led by Ranger Beth Foley. Meet at Harbison State Forest Education Center 5500 Broad River Road Columbia\, SC 29212. Parking is free for this event. \nThe program is geared for 6th grade and up level\, but all ages are welcome to participate. Families with younger siblings can listen in and tag along or stroll the path at your own pace. \nProgram: Survival in the Forest\nStudents will learn how plants and animals survive in the forest. They will participate in an activity called “Every Tree for Itself” where they will become trees that must collect the basic resources needed to survive. Students will also become deer that need to acquire the four habitat components needed in a forest ecosystem. \nLocation Street Address: 5600 Broad River Road  \nTurn in at the sign for Harbison State Forest\, not the SC Forestry Commission headquarters which is next door at 5500 Broad River Road. To reach the Environmental Education Center\, continue past the first parking lot and bear left through the wooden gate onto a gravel road. Take the first right (at the closed metal gate) onto another gravel road. The Education Center is a log cabin building at the top of the hill on the left. It is a public event\, if you prefer to enter individually\, contact Richland County Conservation District for more details \nTheme 2024: May the Forest Be With You Always\nForests are amazing ecosystems that are home to many plants and animals. Forests purify the air we breathe\, filter the water we drink\, prevent erosion\, reduce flooding\, and serve as buffers against climate change. Forests also produce a variety of products used by people\, including lumber\, paper\, food\, and medicine. \nWe invite Richland County K-12 students to create a poster illustrating why forests are important\, and how we can protect and conserve forests so they will be with us always. \nEligibility\nRichland County students in grades K-12 should submit their posters to the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District for local judging by Friday\, April 12\, 2024. Students in other counties in SC should contact their local conservation district for entry deadlines and details. \nRules\n\nPosters MUST be 14”x 22”. We can provide up to 24 sheets of 14”x22” poster paper per school; contact Chanda Cooper at cooper.chanda@richlandcountysc.gov to request supplies.\nAny media may be used to create a flat or two-dimensional effect\, including paint\, marker\, ink\, crayon\, charcoal\, colored pencil\, stickers\, collage\, wallpaper\, magazines\, photos\, digitally-designed graphics or flat objects found in nature.\nPosters should be packaged so they remain flat when sent for judging.\nAll posters must be created by an individual student rather than a team of students.\nThe 2024 contest topic (May the Forest Be With You Always) must be on the poster.\nAttach a signed entry form to the back of the poster. Student or school names must not appear on the front of the poster.\nEntry must be contestant’s original creation and may not be traced from photographs or other artists’ published works.\n\nEvaluation\nPosters will be evaluated by grade level according to the following criteria: \n\nConservation Message: poster illustrates why forests are important and/or how we can conserve forests.  (50%)\nVisual Effectiveness: poster attracts attention\, uses colors and white space effectively\, is easy to read\, is neat\, and makes good use of colors and shading. Space is limited to 20 participants\, with the registration below (scroll down). \nIt’s time for the next round of Among Us Meet-up at the State Museum\, located at 301 Gervais St in Columbia\, SC. \nFriday\, April 26 from 10:30am till 2 (or later). Admission is free with your homeschool ID/certificate. Look for Liz to greet you by the Telescope in order to check in together as a group.  Additional adults must pay $5 admission. \nAmong Us is a scavenger hunt and game of tag. This is geared for ages 10 and up. Players must have a cell phone for communications during the game (though it’s ok to share with a parent and/or other player). \n\nBring snacks if you wish. There’s a cart that will be available to hold your lunch/snacks for our group.\nPlayers will get an task card and ID tag so you’ll be able to identify who else is playing as you cross paths in the musuem.\nYounger siblings/non-players may watch\, but please do not give clues or interfere with the game.\nAbide by the museum rules–and be courteous of others.\nCheck in with Liz/Hosi to get more task cards and at the end of the game\, return the Player ID tags.\n\nGame info to help you prepare\, so we save time getting started: \n*Among Us General Rules* – Follow the Museum Rules – No Teaming (You can help others but no teaming up) – Be Respectful of other players as well as other guests and staff – No shoving\, pushing\, tripping\, running\, or yelling – If you are tagged you have to respect that. The Imposter can and will tell the Game Master and you will be warned to play fair – Only the Game Master can call an Emergency Meeting. From Golf to Shakespeare\, Computer Programming to Bug Biodiversity\, there is something to interest your student! REGISTER HERE!\n  \nPlanning for Camp\nRegistration\nRegistration is completely online. A $20 registration fee per camper (not per camp) will be added at checkout. \nRoom Requests\nCampers may each make one request to room with a friend or sibling. Room requests must be mutual. We will do our best to fulfill each request\, provided it is made on the online reservation form. \nRefund/Cancellation\n$50 deposit is non-refundable. Remaining payments will be refunded only if cancellation is received 10 or more days before the beginning of the camp. There is no refund for cancellations made after the 10-day notice period has expired. If the requested camp is full\, we will issue a complete refund or place your camper’s name on a waiting list. Registration is required–scroll down this page. \nCola City is gearing up our Interest Clubs for the 2024-2025 school year. If you’re interested in STEM\, Environmental Science or Robotics\, let’s spark the possiblities! \nLocation: 431 Mission Court\, Irmo\, SC 29063\nParticipants: Ages 9-14+ (younger siblings with chaperone)\nCost: $10/participant\, all supplies and s’mores snack included. \n \nOur STEM Camp Stations include: \n\nMakey-Makey Joylabz Computer Games\nKapla Blocks Challenge\nChain Reaction Dominos\nSolar Car Kit \nDrawing Robots Electric Toothbrush\nPizza Box Solar Oven Cooking Activity\nMarble Drop Maze Challenge\n\nParticipants will have 3 hours to explore the various stations. Stations are geared for ages 9+ to work with peers\, with minimal instruction. Younger siblings may participate with an adult chaperone working thru the stations together. \nAdults are asked to stay on site to assist in supervising a station. The games are geared for ages 9+ to work with peers and to be fun! Younger siblings may participate with an adult chaperone to participate with other parent/child pairs. \nThis camp is an extension of the Let Grow initiatives to develop creativity\, confidence\, and ability to thrive. Learning real-world social skills and agency in project-based learning activities. \nAdults are asked to stay on site to assist in supervising the games. DESCRIPTION:Let Grow Play Club: Grandby Gardens\nby Cola City Homeschoolers\nTUESDAY\, July 30\, 10 am-noon\nFREE — All ages\nThis activity *IS* hosted by Cola City Homeschoolers\, but there is no sign up necessary. Just show up but there is a sign up form so we can send you a reminder about the location details each week. \nThis is not just another playground meet-up group. It’s a new kind of play program. Intentionally designed to foster independence\, social development\, problem solving–for all ages (especially 8+). Families with younger siblings are also welcome\, though. \nWe hope to see this grow and expand to more projects and activities thru the summer to develop interpersonal connections as well as personal agency. We’re switching up to Tuesdays at 10 am for June/July. \nLet Grow Play Club TUESDAY 10 am-12pm–thru June/July\nThis Week’s Location: Grandby Gardens Park\,  1800 12th St\, Cayce\, SC 29033. (note: GPS sometimes pulls up Grandby Park downtown instead. Try also Cayce Town Hall at 1800 12th Street\, Cayce). \nThis week is a free play–explore the creek and giant kickball. \nBring Yard games\, balls/frisbies\, bubbles\, nerf blasters\, sidewalk chalk\, table games/activities.
