SUMMARY:Book Recommendations
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Book Recommendations:\nSome ideas we’re thinking about to build community. A few of our favorites and a few in the stack by our nightstand. Let’s READ! \n\nFinding Your Third Place\, by Richard Kyte\nDo you have a third place? Your first place is home\, your second place is work\, and your third place is where you go to socialize and build friendships. Yet\, for several reasons\, many people today find themselves without a third place of their own. At a time when our nation is facing an epidemic of loneliness and communities are suffering from a loss of trust\, low levels of engagement\, despair\, and political polarization\, what if the answer to many of our problems lies in a simple idea? What if we just need to pay attention to the places where we find ourselves?\nGreat Good Place by Ray Oldenburg\n“Third places\,” or “great good places\,” are the many public places where people can gather\, put aside the concerns of home and work (their first and second places)\, and hang out simply for the pleasures of good company and lively conversation. They are the heart of a community’s social vitality and the grassroots of a democracy.\nCelebrating the Third Place: Inspiring Stories about the Great Good Places at the Heart of Our Communities by Ray Oldenburg\nThe time has come to celebrate the many third places that dot the American landscape and foster civic life. With 20 black-and-white photographs\, Celebrating the Third Place brings together fifteen firsthand accounts by proprietors of third places\, as well as appreciations by fans who have made spending time at these hangouts a regular part of their lives.\nA Place to Belong: Celebrating Diversity & Kinship in the Home and Beyond by Amber O’Neal Johnston\nA guide for families of all backgrounds to celebrate cultural heritage and embrace inclusivity in the home and beyond. \nGone are the days when socially conscious parents felt comfortable teaching their children to merely tolerate others. Instead\, they are looking for a way to authentically embrace the fullness of their diverse communities. A Place to Belong offers a path forward for families to honor their cultural heritage and champion diversity in the context of daily family life\n\nNever Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic-and What We Can Do About It by Jennifer Breheny Wallace\nIn the ever more competitive race to secure the best possible future\, today’s students face unprecedented pressure to succeed. The pressure to perform is not a matter of parental choice but baked in to our larger society and spurred by increasing income inequality and dwindling opportunities. As a result\, children are increasingly absorbing the message that they have no value outside of their accomplishments\, a message that is reinforced by the media and greater culture at large. In an ironic twist\, kids who receive consistent feedback that they matter no matter what are more likely to have the resilience\, self-confidence\, and psychological security to thrive.

SUMMARY:Family Culture Stories Share Fair
DESCRIPTION:Family Culture Stories Share Fair\nCANCELLED\nBy Cola City Homeschoolers\nWed.\, Dec. 4 from 10am-noon\nAll Ages — $5/space\nNote: This is Cola City event. Registration required–scroll down to reserve your space. \nWho are you? Where do you come from? Tell us about your family history and traditions. This is a great opportunity to learn about each other and make meaningful connections within our community. \nPresentation content: Highlight something about your family culture\, origin stories of where you’re from\, traditions that have been handed down. Create a table top display and prepare a narative about it. It can be a broader story about the culture and traditions. Or it can be a specific story about a relative or ancestor. \nPresentation format: The presenters get to tell about their project several times\, not just a one-time show-n-tell as participants meander and mingle. It’s also very relaxed style of presenting one-on-one\, rather than the formal “speech”. \nWe recommend projects that are hands-on\, interactive demonstrations or have samples\, hand-outs\, give-aways. Make it conversational for others to ask questions and comment\, not just passively listen. \nLocation: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia\, 2701 Heyward St\, Columbia\, SC 29205 (Let Grow Play Club meet-up is at Grandby Garden afterwards from 1-3pm) \nPurpose: Cola City Homeschoolers believe that education is two parts. Learning about yourself and learning how you fit into the world around you. It takes intentional efforts to do that. And learning is a lifelong journey\, sometimes relearning\, discovering something new that you never knew before\, and unlearning to change your perspectives.\nRecommended readings: Here’s a couple resources to inspire you with practical ways to foster more open dialogue on tough topics–with our stories. \n\n\n\nA Place to Belong: Celebrating Diversity and Kinship in the Home and Beyond by Amber O’neal Johnston. This is a guide for families of all backgrounds to celebrate cultural heritage and embrace inclusivity in the home and beyond. Ideal for parent/educators who want to cultivate a home library that provides mirrors to reflect your own lived experiences and windows to glimpse into differing experiences.\nStories Behind Stances: Creating Empathy Thru Hearing the Other Side by  Chris Singleton. In his mission to unite people from all different walks of life\, Chris explores various ways in which we can learn to see beyond our differences and embrace our shared values\, hopes\, and aspirations. Ideal for Adults and Teens to consider our own beliefs and biases\, to listen to those whom we disagree with\, and find common ground where we can build a better world. \nYour Life Matters by Chris Singleton. Written by national speaker Chris Singleton\, who lost his own mother in the 2015 Charleston church shooting\, Your Life Matters teaches kids to stand tall in the face of racial adversity and fight for the life they dream of.\n\n\n\n \nRegistration is Closed–Event is CANCELLED.\nCome for Play Club from 1-3pm\n

SUMMARY:Reader's Theater
DESCRIPTION:Common Ground: Reader’s Theater\nApril 23 from 12:30-2:30pm\nAt UU Congregation\nAll Ages — $5/participant\nNOTE: This event has been cancelled due to low response/not enough registrations. If you’re interested in these kinds of facilitated activities\, please be sure to pre-register so we can prepare supplies.  \nThe Common Ground Collective is a space for students and parents to come together\, connect\, and grow. In a world often divided by differences\, our mission is to create a joyful and supportive community where we celebrate what makes us unique and discover the common ground that unites us all. \nThis week we’re doing Reader’s Theater. Participants are given the opportunity to perform a script together. Reader’s Theater gives students the chance to practice reading aloud\, and practice reading with fluency and expression.\nOne of the most enjoyable ways to help students comprehend stories they read is to have them act it out\, using strategies for prompting oral development\, plus team effort and collaboration! Geared for ages 9+\, but younger readers may also participate. \nWe’re asking for $5 contribution toward the overhead costs of the facility. If you have multiple children or the cost is prohibitive\, pay what you can afford–and come anyway. We’d rather you come out and play\, than stay home. SUMMARY:Science Share Fair
DESCRIPTION:Science Share Fair\nBy Cola City Common Ground Club\nWednesday\, May 7 at 12:30\nAll Ages — $5/space\nThis is a fun twist on Show and Tell. Rather than stand up in front of a group to do a one-off presentation. Participants will set up a table/presentation area for on-going short presentations/demonstrations in a “fair” format. Participants will have designated presentation time\, then also time to mingle as viewers/observers while others are presenting. \nIt’s a great chance to show off something that you have already learned in any topic of Science: Biology\, Chemistry\, Physics\, Earth Science\, Natural Sciences\, Astronomy\, Environmental Science.\nWe recommend projects that are hands-on\, interactive demonstrations or have samples\, hand-outs\, give-aways. You can do something that includes the scientific method\, if you want\, but it’s not required. \nAll participants will get a prize and certificate. There will not be judges to evaluate. This is a fun way to “tell others” something that you learned. You can do individual projects/presentations or buddy up with siblings or friends for your presentations. \nBring your presentation/project and your own table/display. We will set up between 12:30-1 pm. Presentation shifts will begin at after everyone is set up. \nQuestions? Contact Kim at colacityinfo@gmail.com. Text and call if you need to reach us last minute. \nSign up here to reserve your space:
