SUMMARY:Science Share Fair
DESCRIPTION:Science Share Fair\nBy Cola City Common Ground Club\nWednesday\, May 7 at 12:30\nAll Ages — $5/space\nThis is a fun twist on Show and Tell. Rather than stand up in front of a group to do a one-off presentation. Participants will set up a table/presentation area for on-going short presentations/demonstrations in a “fair” format. Participants will have designated presentation time\, then also time to mingle as viewers/observers while others are presenting. \nIt’s a great chance to show off something that you have already learned in any topic of Science: Biology\, Chemistry\, Physics\, Earth Science\, Natural Sciences\, Astronomy\, Environmental Science.\nWe recommend projects that are hands-on\, interactive demonstrations or have samples\, hand-outs\, give-aways. You can do something that includes the scientific method\, if you want\, but it’s not required. \nAll participants will get a prize and certificate. There will not be judges to evaluate. This is a fun way to “tell others” something that you learned. You can do individual projects/presentations or buddy up with siblings or friends for your presentations. \nBring your presentation/project and your own table/display. We will set up between 12:30-1 pm. Presentation shifts will begin at after everyone is set up. \nQuestions? Contact Kim at colacityinfo@gmail.com. SUMMARY:Reader's Theater
DESCRIPTION:Common Ground: Reader’s Theater\nApril 23 from 12:30-2:30pm\nAt UU Congregation\nAll Ages — $5/participant\nNOTE: This event has been cancelled due to low response/not enough registrations. If you’re interested in these kinds of facilitated activities\, please be sure to pre-register so we can prepare supplies.  \nThe Common Ground Collective is a space for students and parents to come together\, connect\, and grow. Participants are given the opportunity to perform a script together. Geared for ages 9+\, but younger readers may also participate. \nWe’re asking for $5 contribution toward the overhead costs of the facility. If you have multiple children or the cost is prohibitive\, pay what you can afford–and come anyway. We’d rather you come out and play\, than stay home. Please sign up so we know how many participants are coming! \nLocation: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia\, 2701 Heyward St\, Columbia\, SC 29205\nLook for Kim to greet you. SUMMARY:Family Culture Stories Share Fair
DESCRIPTION:Family Culture Stories Share Fair\nCANCELLED\nBy Cola City Homeschoolers\nWed.\, Dec. 4 from 10am-noon\nAll Ages — $5/space\nNote: This is Cola City event. Registration required–scroll down to reserve your space. \nWho are you? Where do you come from? Tell us about your family history and traditions. This is a great opportunity to learn about each other and make meaningful connections within our community. \nPresentation content: Highlight something about your family culture\, origin stories of where you’re from\, traditions that have been handed down. Create a table top display and prepare a narative about it. It can be a broader story about the culture and traditions. Or it can be a specific story about a relative or ancestor. \nPresentation format: The presenters get to tell about their project several times\, not just a one-time show-n-tell as participants meander and mingle. It’s also very relaxed style of presenting one-on-one\, rather than the formal “speech”. \nWe recommend projects that are hands-on\, interactive demonstrations or have samples\, hand-outs\, give-aways. Make it conversational for others to ask questions and comment\, not just passively listen. \nLocation: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia\, 2701 Heyward St\, Columbia\, SC 29205 (Let Grow Play Club meet-up is at Grandby Garden afterwards from 1-3pm) \nPurpose: Cola City Homeschoolers believe that education is two parts. Learning about yourself and learning how you fit into the world around you. It takes intentional efforts to do that. And learning is a lifelong journey\, sometimes relearning\, discovering something new that you never knew before\, and unlearning to change your perspectives.\nRecommended readings: Here’s a couple resources to inspire you with practical ways to foster more open dialogue on tough topics–with our stories. \n\n\n\nA Place to Belong: Celebrating Diversity and Kinship in the Home and Beyond by Amber O’neal Johnston. This is a guide for families of all backgrounds to celebrate cultural heritage and embrace inclusivity in the home and beyond. Ideal for parent/educators who want to cultivate a home library that provides mirrors to reflect your own lived experiences and windows to glimpse into differing experiences.\nStories Behind Stances: Creating Empathy Thru Hearing the Other Side by  Chris Singleton. In his mission to unite people from all different walks of life\, Chris explores various ways in which we can learn to see beyond our differences and embrace our shared values\, hopes\, and aspirations. Ideal for Adults and Teens to consider our own beliefs and biases\, to listen to those whom we disagree with\, and find common ground where we can build a better world. \nYour Life Matters by Chris Singleton. Written by national speaker Chris Singleton\, who lost his own mother in the 2015 Charleston church shooting\, Your Life Matters teaches kids to stand tall in the face of racial adversity and fight for the life they dream of.\n\n\n\n \nRegistration is Closed–Event is CANCELLED.\nCome for Play Club from 1-3pm\n

This Field Trip is another “Let Grow” initative to foster agency and autonomy at age-appropriate levels. \nSally Salamander is a walking tour of downtown Columbia featuring numbered\, bronze statues of South Carolina’s state amphibian\, the spotted salamander. The tour was presented by the Leadership Columbia class of 2009. We’ll meet-up at Columbia SC Visitors Center to get started! \nI’m Sally\, Columbia SC’s official amphibian ambassador! As you look for me around downtown\, be sure to notice the beautiful architecture and cultural icons of South Carolina’s capital city. We pride ourselves on maintaining our rich history as we build for the future. When you spot me along your journey\, feel free to pet me. Like our locals\, I am friendly and full of Southern graciousness. \nStreet Parking available near Columbia Regional Visitors Center\, 1120 Lincoln Street Columbia\, SC 29201. Contact Kim with Cola City Homeschoolers if you’re lost along the way or running late: 803-307-4880\n \nWe will be exploring the spots along Main Street and looping back to the start. We won’t cover the entire distance of them all. You can come back to find the rest on your own (or we can schedule part 2). Families with younger children\, please consider the walking distance and duration of time. If we need to split up into older/younger groups. \nSign up here so we can keep an eye out for you and send you meet-up reminders:\nLoading…
