SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Rebecca Kuang
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Author: Rebecca Kuang\nby Richland Library Main\nFriday\, Nov 15th @ 7pm\nAll Ages — FREE\nNote: This is NOT a Cola City event \nAward-winning\, #1 New York Times bestselling author Rebecca F. Kuang will discuss her recent works Babel: An Arcane History and Yellowface as part of Richland Library’s Broader Bookshelf program. The author talk will be followed by a reception\, book sale\, and book signing. \nThe Broader Bookshelf Reading Challenge encourages readers to expand their bookshelves and seek out new authors and challenging subjects. Ms. Rebecca F. Kuang will share her work and talk about the themes of student revolutions\, colonial resistance\, diversity\, racism\, and cultural appropriation. \nThis is an after-hours event and registration is not required. The library will close as usual at 6:00 p.m. and will reopen at 6:30 p.m. for attendees of Meet the Author: Rebecca Kuang. \nRebecca F. Kuang is the award-winning\, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Poppy War trilogy and Babel: An Arcane History.  Babel\, a thematic response to The Secret History and a tonal retort to Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell\, grapples with student revolutions\, colonial resistance\, and the use of language and translation as the dominating tool of the British empire. It asks the question\, can powerful institutions be changed from within\, or does revolution always require violence? \nHer most recent novel\, Yellowface\, young writer Juniper Song becomes an overnight sensation – but she is not who she says she is\, she didn’t write the book she claims she wrote\, and she is most certainly not Asian American. Yellowface grapples with questions of diversity\, racism\, and cultural appropriation\, as well as the terrifying alienation of social media. It’s a timely\, razor-sharp\, and eminently readable. \nA Marshall Scholar\, she has an MPhil in Chinese Studies from Cambridge and an MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies from Oxford; she is now pursuing a PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale\, where she studies diaspora\, contemporary Chinese literature\, and Asian American literature. \nMore info about this event can be found HERE.

SUMMARY:Owl Prowl
DESCRIPTION:Owl Prowl\nby Congaree National Park\nFriday\, Dec 20th @4pm\nFREE — All Ages\nNote: This is NOT a Cola City event \nHave you ever heard an owl calling in the dead of night and been curious? How do they hunt? How do they see? Why do people associate them with wisdom? Join park staff for an evening hike to answer these questions and more! \nOwls are mysterious creatures to many\, as we do not often see them\, and only hear them calling at night outside of our homes. This 1.5 hour guided hike along the Boardwalk and Sims trail. We will talk about the unique adaptations owls have made that allow them to be such capable hunters\, and how they use their senses to survive and thrive in the dark. We will keep our eyes and ears open and hopefully catch a glimpse or hear one of the many owls that call Congaree National Park home\, as well as possibly other nocturnal creatures that might be out in the dark as well. \nWhat to know: \n-We will be meeting at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. \n-Pets are not permitted on this walk. Service animals are welcome. \n– Visitors may bring a flashlight as this program will take place after dark. Flashlights should have a red mode\, or the light should be covered with red cellophane in order to preserve visitors and wildlife’s night vision. If you do not have a red mode\, the park will be providing red cellophane. \n-Please wear comfortable shoes as we will be walking approximately 2.5 miles. Please bring water and wear weather appropriate clothing. \n– Event could be canceled due to inclement weather. \nGet your FREE TICKETS HERE! \n
