Visit the Nature as Teacher Preserve for Education on 5/15 from 10:30-12:00 to learn about Water Quality at our Creekside Classroom. We will be citizen scientists exploring creek macroinvertebrates and learning their relation to water quality.\n\nDate: Thursday 5/15/25 10:30-12\nLocation: The Nature as Teacher Preserve for Education\, 247 Chestnut Ferry Road\, Camden SC 29020. Please aim to arrive 15-20 minutes early so the activities can start promptly at 10:30.\n\nCost: $10.00/participant  \nWhat to bring/wear: Please help students dress for the weather and be prepared with a full\, reusable water bottle. We recommend closed-toe shoes (water proof boots preferred) and long pants to help protect legs in nature. All science supplies provided.\n\n Directions: From Walmart in Camden head north on Springdale Drive\, toward the race track. Chestnut Ferry Road (a dirt road) crosses over Springdale drive at the bend. Turn left onto Chestnut Ferry road and continue down until you see our pinecone logo sign. Our driveway is the last on the left. After proceeding through our gate\, do not stop in the maintenance lot. Continue down our long driveway\, past the right turn\, and into the parking area. You will see our green and tan restroom building. In a world often divided by differences\, our mission is to create a joyful and supportive community where we celebrate what makes us unique and discover the common ground that unites us all. \nThis week we’re doing Reader’s Theater. Participants are given the opportunity to perform a script together. Reader’s Theater gives students the chance to practice reading aloud\, and practice reading with fluency and expression.\nOne of the most enjoyable ways to help students comprehend stories they read is to have them act it out\, using strategies for prompting oral development\, plus team effort and collaboration! Geared for ages 9+\, but younger readers may also participate. \nWe’re asking for $5 contribution toward the overhead costs of the facility. If you have multiple children or the cost is prohibitive\, pay what you can afford–and come anyway. We’d rather you come out and play\, than stay home. Participants will learn basic identification techniques for wildlife tracks\, skulls\, pelts\, and scat and why these skills are important for wildlife biologists. If you have younger siblings\, you can sign up just your teen participant to be chaperoned/accompanied by Cola City. \nThis is a great opportunity for learning about how to read the bus routes and plan out your own adventure. Please register on the form below (scroll down) so we can provide supplies. \nCome on out for a FREE Make-It-Take-It Holiday craft project with Cola City Homeschoolers on Wednesday\, December 20 from 12:30-2:30 pm at St. Andrews Branch of Richland County Library located at 2916 Broad River Rd\, Columbia\, SC 29210 \nEach participant will be able to create 2 Holiday Ornaments with #6 Shrinky Dink plastic. Great for gifts or as a commemorative ornament to keep. All supplies included. And card making station will also be available. \nThe project will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Come and go anytime\, or hang out to socialize with others. We will set up several project stations for participants to rotate out and make room for others. Register below. \nCome for this ranger-led lesson on forest conservation\, led by Ranger Beth Foley. Meet at Harbison State Forest Education Center 5500 Broad River Road Columbia\, SC 29212. Parking is free for this event. \nThe program is geared for 6th grade and up level\, but all ages are welcome to participate. Families with younger siblings can listen in and tag along or stroll the path at your own pace. \nProgram: Survival in the Forest\nStudents will learn how plants and animals survive in the forest. They will participate in an activity called “Every Tree for Itself” where they will become trees that must collect the basic resources needed to survive. Students will also become deer that need to acquire the four habitat components needed in a forest ecosystem. \nLocation Street Address: 5600 Broad River Road  \nTurn in at the sign for Harbison State Forest\, not the SC Forestry Commission headquarters which is next door at 5500 Broad River Road. To reach the Environmental Education Center\, continue past the first parking lot and bear left through the wooden gate onto a gravel road. Take the first right (at the closed metal gate) onto another gravel road. The Education Center is a log cabin building at the top of the hill on the left.
