SUMMARY:Social Studies Fair
DESCRIPTION:Social Studies Fair\nby Southeast Columbia Co-op\nTuesday\, October 3 from 10am-noon\nAll Ages — 2.50/participant\n\nJoin Southeast Academic Co-op & Cola City Homeschoolers for the Annual Social Studies Share Fair! 806 Universal Drive Columbia. \nCome present projects and information about what you’ve been learning in history\, geography\, cultural studies\, sociology\, government\, and any other social studies topics. Here are a few ideas to get you started: \n\n\nDress like Abe Lincoln (and maybe even recite the Gettysburg Address) \nShow your salt dough map of South Carolina \nRead your report on nomads\n Build a model of a pyramid and show what’s inside \nSing a song from another country\n\nProjects can be something you already completed previously as a way to showcase learning that you’ve already completed. Or projects can represent current learning in progress. We recommend projects that are hands-on\, interactive demonstrations or have samples\, hand-outs\, giveaways. \nTables are provided\, but you can bring your own table for your display. Set up from (10 am-10:20 am). Presentation shifts will begin at 10:30 am. \nAll Participants will get certificate and prize. Please pre-register so we can prepare certificates and space.\nFees help cover the overhead costs of the facility use. \nPresentation format: The presenters get to tell about their project several times\, not just a one-time show-n-tell as participants meander and mingle. It’s also very relaxed style of presenting one-on-one\, rather than the formal “speech”. \nExamples: Here’s a peek at a few of the projects from previous share fairs.\n \nPre-register to participate in Social Studies Share Fair:

SUMMARY:Let Grow Play Club
DESCRIPTION:Let Grow Play Club\nby: Cola City Homeschoolers\nAugust 1\, 10-noon\nAll Ages\nThe Club is the brainchild of Let Grow co-founder Dr. Peter Gray\, the eminent psychologist who has spent his life studying the crucial role of unstructured\, mixed-age “free play” in developing children’s creativity\, confidence\, and ability to thrive. \n\nBy organizing their own games and learning to solve the inevitable spats\, kids learn real-world social skills. You can’t solve problems if there’s always an adult right there at recess or in a play group\, solving them first!\nMixed-age play benefits all kids. Older students develop responsibility\, leadership and empathy. Younger kids learn executive function by trying to be like the big kids.\nKids who are allowed to take small risks and figure things out themselves at home will have more grit and determination at school.\n\nOur club sessions will be on Tuesdays from 10-noon\, with a monthly commitment so we can manage the participants and “lifeguards” for each play club session. We’re moving the location indoors to beat the heat.\nLocation: Richland Library (Main/Downtown) 1431 Assembly St\, Columbia \nThere’s a large children’s room with open areas for kids to gather for self-directed activities. There’s also a designated teens only area (even parents aren’t allowed in).\nSomething for any age.
