Take Action Teen Club

For tweens/teens 12+

Education is 2 parts: Learning about the world around us and learning about ourselves–so we know how we fit into the world.  We’ve been inspired by recent conversations about the pressures of achievement culture, the loneliness epidemic, and the fragmentation of community connectedness. We’ve found a vision for a world where service to others could take center stage in people’s lives, rather than the anxiety-ridden race for personal achievement.

A growing body of research has found that people with high levels of mattering—those who both feel valued by others and feel that they are adding value to the world—are more likely to thrive in adolescence and adulthood. Take Action club offers teens/tweens intentional activities:

• to learn about themselves and their personal strengths and abilities.
• to make meaningful connections to the local community–and the world around us.
• And have FUN!

Let’s inspire our teens into ACTION for the SPRING Session so they’ll be implementing projects and activities for each other and for younger siblings.

Each club session has a separate registration form and participation fee. Meets on 1st/3rd Wednesdays from 12:30-2:30 at the Unitarian Universal Church, 2701 Heyward St, Columbia, SC 29205. (Let Grow Play Club  on 2nd/4th Wednesdays ages 8+, various locations).

January 22: Dance Party/Homeschool Spirit Day, $5

February 5: Minute-t0-Win-it Games, $5

February 19: Art Stations Make-it-Take-it, $5

• Virtual SC:  A free state-sponsored ala carte supplemental online program serving students currently attending public, private and home schools in grades 7-12
• SC Discus: South Carolina’s Virtual Library is the “information place” for all South Carolinians. Provides free access to an electronic library that’s available 24/7. Accessible from your county library’s website or via Discus with username/password. READ MORE HERE. 
• Ed’s Editions: Used bookseller locally owned by homeschooler, has large selection of homeschool materials.
• Richland County Library: Education Studio: A carefully-curated collection of books and materials that support learning through a multisensory approach. The specially-designed studio space provides quiet seating for homeschoolers, tutors and teachers to prepare and conduct lessons. Reading specialists offer a personalized consultation.
• Discovery Therapies: Learning Development center that goes beyond tutoring by addressing the underlying issues that cause students to struggle.
• Educational Learning Services: Testing, tutoring, curriculum counseling for homeschoolers in SC and beyond.
  Homeschooling the Special Needs Child: Consultation, Curriculum counseling, testing services especially for homeschoolers.
• Dyslexia Reading Center: Offers services and resources for students who struggle with reading and those who teach them.
• All Kinds of Minds: Neurodiversity-Affirming Pediatric Occupational Therapy Services
• SC Assistive Technology: Technology devices and services to help people with disabilities live, work and learn more independently.
• Family Connections of SC: Provides programs and support to families that have a child with a disability or specific healthcare need.
